Why Pickleball is Perfect for Children of All Ages

These days, it’s normal to see children “specializing” in competitive and travel sports at very young ages. Whether it’s travel baseball, competitive soccer leagues, or intensive dance recitals, the pressure is on for these little athletes to set their sights on college or professional sports before they’ve even finished grade school! While there are a few professional athletes who knew their path at age 6, most children need more variety in approaches to athletics. In early 2024, the popular mommy blog “Scary Mommy” lamented the ways kids are pressured to find their calling so early and at such a high expense. Here are just a few reasons why pickleball can provide kids with less pressure and a more well-rounded competitive spirit:

  1. Pickleball can be played as a family: Instead of splitting every member of the family up and running in multiple chaotic directions, pickleball can be played together! Even grandparents can join in the action (especially on our cushioned courts), and create memories that involve more than just riding in the car between practices.

  2. Pickleball is affordable: With paddles and court shoes, children can simply begin the sport. You don’t need exorbitant equipment or to commit to tournament fees and weekend travel if your child wants to learn and take lessons. There are also opportunities (such as our youth round robin play) for everyone to play and learn to work with a partner or a team at a less intensive level. Beginners and experts both have a place in the sport, and it’s more equitable for lower-income families.

  3. Pickleball is good for mental health: A study by the National Institute of Health shows improved mental health in adults (Source), while Youth Sports Psychology also notes the benefits of the sport for it’s inclusivity and openness to all athletic levels (Source). Besides the obvious physical benefits (hand-eye coordination, speed, and strength), the benefits to mental health and social skills include teamwork, learning to win and lose with grace, and confidence that comes from learning something new.
